ABOUT / HISTORY

Livestock entries at Newark Livestock Market continue to increase. In April 2007 the company achieved a record weekly turnover and traded stock valued at more than £1M.

Annual throughput figures show the business sold almost 23,000 prime cattle as well as 4,000 stores 2006. Prime lamb numbers have also shown a big increase with the weekly throughput now approaching 2,000 head at peak times. In the first five months of this year there has been a 38.5% increase in prime sheep numbers while store cattle throughput has also risen by 27% and over 30 months cattle by 82%.

Renowned for the quality of its prime cattle, many sourced as strong, continental-sired stores bred in the Welsh borders, south west and Scottish borders, Newark Livestock Market attracts a regular weekly turnout of major wholesale buyers – virtually all end-users. The modern market premises – totally re-built and re-located to its present site in 1990 - are ideally situated just minutes from the AI to provide easy access to all main routes.

Paul GentryThe man on the rostrum……….Paul Gentry, Newark Livestock Market’s auctioneer and a director of the company, maintains a close, working relationship with his farmer-vendors to ensure their stock is marketed to the best advantage. He considers regular on-farm visits to be a fundamental part of the company’s on-going approach to efficient livestock marketing. Says Paul Gentry: “It’s a team effort. Working with farmers to help them market their stock to the best advantage is something we believe is at the heart of the business and critical to its success and reputation.”

A typical market day……….Newark Livestock Market has penning for 600 head of 600kg prime cattle and 3000 sheep although up to 1100 cattle of varying ages have been sold through the market in a single day’s trading.

Experienced yard staff, wide alleyways and 18 un-loading bays – plus new penning that has just been installed to increase capacity and act as overnight lairage – ensures both buyers and sellers can move stock quickly and efficiently through the market from 5.30am. For vendors travelling long distances there are facilities to accommodate stock over-night prior to Wednesday’s sale.

Newark Livestock Market operates a slaughter-only market on alternate weeks selling clean cattle, cull cows, young bulls, prime sheep and cull ewes. The following week, to enable vendors to observe the six-day rule, the market sells cows, young bulls, prime cattle, breeding cattle, store cattle, prime sheep, breeding sheep and cull ewes.

Selling starts at 9.30am with cull cows followed by young bulls, sheep and the finishing the day with clean cattle.

Says Paul Gentry: “Logistics have been an important part of the market’s development. It’s a big advantage as far as buyers are concerned and it’s ideally located to attract stock from a wide area. When you get the stock you get the buyers and when you get the buyers you get the stock.

Cash on the nail……….Newark Livestock Market prides itself on fast payment for livestock sold through the ring. Farmers can collect a cheque for their stock within minutes of it being sold. Computerised data of each sale-ring transaction is sent direct from the rostrum to the market office.

Stock on screen……… for farmers who can’t stay at the market to watch their cattle being sold the market provides a facility enabling vendors to download live pictures direct from the mart via the internet which provide all relevant sale details………and even if you prefer to sit down and eat in the market café while your stock is being sold, the same live pictures and information are transmitted to a plasma-screen to make sure no one misses out on the action.

On the rostrum……..Paul Gentry, a farmer’s son hailing from Rugby, started his auctioneering career with Midland Marts at Banbury in 1986 and moved to Newark Livestock Market in 1992.

Pedigree a pleasure……..many leading pedigree breeders have successfully sought the expertise of Newark Livestock Market in staging successful herd and flock fixtures. Paul Gentry welcomes enquiries from breeders considering future sales which can be staged on-farm or can benefit from the location and facilities available at the market.

On the farm……..if you’re thinking about holding a farm sale why not give Newark Livestock Market a call? Paul Gentry would be pleased to discuss on-farm fixtures of livestock, machinery and equipment or other dead-stock.

The true professionals……………….land and property valuations, letting of rural, residential and commercial property as well as a full range of other land-agency based professional services are available through Newark Livestock Market.

A family firm with its feet firmly on the land…….Doug Gascoine, the company’s chairman, was educated at Southwell Grammar School. He qualified as a Chartered Surveyor at the well known local firm of Turner Fletcher and Essex in Nottingham and learnt to sell in both Newark and Nottingham Cattle Markets. He set up his first business Southwell in 1954.

As well as the family’s current involvement in Newark Livestock Market and running a successful furniture auction house in Newark, the Gascoine family farms in both Nottinghamshire and North Yorkshire. The North Yorkshire farm between Whitby and Scarborough carries 300 Limousin-cross suckler cows. The progeny are moved to the family’s Nottinghamshire holding for finishing before being sold in Newark.
